What Is Generator Commissioning?

Generator commissioning is the structured process of verifying that a newly installed generator set operates correctly and safely in its final location before it is handed over for service.

Factory Test vs. Site Commissioning

Diesel Generator Commissioning: Key Tests

A complete commissioning procedure is a sequence of six stages. Each one verifies a different failure mode, so skipping any stage leaves a specific risk unaddressed.

TEST 01

Pre-Commissioning Inspection

Before the engine ever turns over, verify the installation is mechanically and electrically sound. Confirm the unit sits level, shipping brackets and transit packing are removed, and the area is clean and ventilated.

  • Fuel, coolant, and oil at correct levels
  • Battery fully charged; block heater operational
  • Earthing conductor connected and sized correctly
  • Fuel supply, return lines, and exhaust complete
TEST 02

First Start & No-Load Run

Start the generator in manual mode with the breaker open. During the first 10–15 minutes, monitor oil pressure, coolant temperature, and exhaust color for any abnormality.

  • Voltage and frequency stabilize at rated values
  • Engine reaches rated speed smoothly
  • No unusual noise or excessive vibration
  • Establishes mechanical baseline for loaded tests
TEST 03

Load Bank Test

The load bank test applies a controlled resistive load in steps to verify the generator delivers rated power while holding voltage and frequency within acceptable limits. It also burns off wet stacking deposits and validates cooling, fuel, and control systems under real demand.

ISO 8528-6 specifies testing at these four load points. Record voltage, frequency, oil pressure, and coolant temperature at each step.
TEST 04

ATS Transfer Test

An automatic transfer switch that does not transfer is the difference between a generator and an expensive paperweight. Simulate a utility failure to confirm auto-start, load transfer, and return-to-mains operation.

  • Transfer time ≤ 10 seconds (NFPA 110)
  • Interlocks prevent backfeeding
  • Engine cool-down run and shutdown verified
TEST 05

Protection Relay Trip Tests

Protection relays are the generator's last line of defense. Trip-test each protection function by simulating the fault condition and confirming the breaker opens or the engine shuts down as designed.

Commissioning is only meaningful when it is measured against a recognized standard. The checklist references acceptance criteria from the standards most often cited in generator projects.

Important: Referencing the correct standard on each line is what separates a defensible commissioning report from a generic tick sheet. If your project specification calls for a particular standard, that standard governs where values differ.
Common Errors

Common Generator Commissioning Mistakes

Most commissioning problems come from a small number of recurring assumptions. Avoiding these errors helps prevent both equipment failures and acceptance disputes.

Skipping the Load Bank Test

A generator that passes a no-load run may still fail under full load. Load bank testing at 100% of rated output is the only way to verify performance under real demand and to burn off wet stacking deposits.

Not Testing Protection Relays

Protection relays are often assumed to be correctly set from the factory. Trip-testing each function confirms the control panel settings and relay coordination match the design, so a real fault is contained rather than escalated.

Ignoring ATS Timing and Coordination

An ATS that transfers too slowly or fails to interlock correctly can cause a generator to start but never carry the load. NFPA 110 requires transfer times of 10 seconds or less for emergency systems.

Forgetting Environmental Conditions

Altitude, ambient temperature, and ventilation all affect engine output and alternator cooling. A generator that passes commissioning at sea level may not perform the same at 2,000 m or in 45 °C ambient heat.

Commissioning Without a Written Record

A verbal sign-off is not a defensible record. A completed, signed commissioning checklist is the document that proves readiness, establishes the warranty start date, and protects all parties if a dispute arises.

Final generator acceptance should be confirmed against the complete load schedule, motor-starting sequence, power factor, site conditions, duty rating, and selected engine-alternator combination before equipment is placed into service.
