New generators need their first oil change early, typically at 30 to 50 hours or within the first month, because fresh engines shed metal debris as the rings seat.
NFPA 110 requires standby generators to be exercised at least monthly under at least 30% of rated load. Full-load annual load-bank testing is best practice.
The one rule every manufacturer agrees on is "whichever comes first": a 250-hour oil change is due at 250 hours or 6 months, whichever arrives first. If you do nothing else, change the oil on time and keep a log — oil is the cheapest insurance a generator has.

Check engine oil on the dipstick, coolant in the recovery tank, and fuel level at 50% or better. Read battery voltage; below 12.4 V means charge or replace. Walk around for oil, coolant, and fuel leaks. Check belts for cracks and glazing. Clear the alarm log.
Clean battery terminals and reapply corrosion inhibitor. Check electrolyte level on flooded batteries and top up with distilled water only. Confirm charger float voltage, typically 13.2 to 13.8 V. Drain water from the fuel-water separator bowl. Verify the block heater works. Run the set under at least 30% load for 30 minutes, per NFPA 110.
Change oil and filter with the engine warm. Replace or clean the air filter element. Drain the fuel pre-filter. Check governor action and AVR output. Send an oil sample if the set runs hard; oil analysis catches bearing wear, fuel dilution, and coolant ingress before they become failures.
Replace primary and secondary fuel filters. Replace the coolant filter. Clean radiator fins. Pressure-test the cooling system. Check fan-belt tension, roughly 10 to 15 mm of deflection at midspan. Inspect exhaust system for rust, cracks, and loose hangers. Check valve clearance if your engine calls for it at this interval.
Run a load-bank test at 100% rated load. Flush and refill cooling system with fresh 50/50 coolant. Replace belts, hoses, and flexible fuel and oil lines. Megger the alternator windings; insulation resistance should read above 1 megohm. Test every safety shutdown, including low oil pressure, high coolant temperature, and overspeed. Thermal-image the connections and breaker terminals under load. Test the six rotating diodes and match forward voltage within 10%. Torque all main electrical connections.
Overhaul the injectors and inspect the turbocharger for shaft play and oil leaks. Verify fuel-pump timing. Test the protection relays and calibrate the AVR. If the set runs prime duty, plan the overhaul ladder from oil analysis rather than from the calendar alone. Fuel system work belongs in the same routine: drain the day tank weekly, the main tank bottom monthly, replace fuel filters at 250 to 500 hours, polish stored fuel annually, and test fuel for water and microbes yearly.
The single biggest mistake in generator maintenance is ignoring duty type. A standby generator maintenance schedule and a prime-power schedule are different documents, because the two machines answer to different clocks. A maintenance schedule chart that treats them alike is wrong for one of them.
A prime-power generator is the site's main supply. It runs for long stretches, often 12 to 24 hours a day, so its hourly ladder is the binding clock. At 12 hours a day, the 250-hour oil service arrives every 21 days, the 500-hour service every 42 days, and the 1,000-hour full service about every 3 months. Prime sets also need the overhaul ladder — top-end work in the 8,000 to 15,000-hour range and major overhauls beyond that, planned from oil analysis.
A standby generator exists to carry critical loads when the grid fails. It may log a handful of running hours a year, so the calendar clock binds: 6-month services, annual full service, and the NFPA 110 discipline of monthly exercise with regular load-bank testing. The exercise run matters precisely because the set runs so little otherwise; it loads bearings, seats seals, dries the windings, and proves the set will start when called.

A set that shows rising iron and lead is telling you the overhaul clock has moved up, regardless of what the chart says. Operators who run oil analysis routinely extend overhaul intervals safely, because they service the evidence instead of the guess.
Changing oil on time is also a warranty condition for most manufacturers. The maintenance log that records each change, with date, hours, and filter part numbers, is the proof a warranty claim depends on.
