A reference table that maps every country to its nominal mains electricity standard — the single-phase voltage, three-phase voltage, frequency (Hz), and plug type. It is the specification input for any generator sold or installed outside its manufacturing country.

The Global Divide: 50 Hz vs 60 Hz Countries

Frequency splits the world into two camps, and the boundary follows history more than geography. The decision of whether your generator must run at 1,500 rpm (50 Hz) or 1,800 rpm (60 Hz) determines the engine speed, the governor, and the alternator configuration.

50 Hz Countries

50 Hz countries include most of Europe, Asia, Africa, Australia, and New Zealand, plus Russia and the CIS. The 230 V, 50 Hz standard dominates this camp, with 220 V and 240 V as older or regional variants. If you export to Africa, the Middle East, Southeast Asia, or the European market, the default build is 50 Hz.

60 Hz Countries

60 Hz countries include North America, Central America, parts of South America, the Caribbean, Japan west of the 60 Hz line, South Korea, the Philippines, and Saudi Arabia. The dominant standards are 120 V, 60 Hz and 127 V, 60 Hz single-phase, with 208 V, 480 V, and 220 V three-phase outputs.

A 110V 60Hz countries list begins with the United States, Canada, and Mexico and extends through most of Central America and the Caribbean, with the 127 V variant common across Latin America.

Frequency & Engine Speed

The frequency is not arbitrary. It is set by engine speed on a four-pole alternator:

1,500 rpm × 4 ÷ 120 = 50 Hz
1,800 rpm × 4 ÷ 120 = 60 Hz

So "50 Hz vs 60 Hz countries" is really a question of whether your generator must run at 1,500 or 1,800 rpm, and whether your alternator and governor are built for it.

Dual‑Standard Countries

Dual‑standard countries complicate the map. Japan runs 100 V on both frequencies: 50 Hz in the east (Tokyo region) and 60 Hz in the west (Osaka region). Brazil uses 127 V or 220 V at 60 Hz depending on the state. Cuba lists 110 V and 220 V, both at 60 Hz.

For these markets, confirm the city‑level standard, not the country‑level one, before you build.

Voltage has its own families, and they do not line up neatly with frequency. Understanding the 110–127 V and 220–240 V families — and their exceptions — is essential for specifying the correct generator alternator.

110 to 127 V Family

The 110 to 127 V family covers North America, parts of Latin America, and the Caribbean: 110 V, 115 V, 117 V, and 127 V nominal. Jamaica and Barbados use 115 V at 50 Hz — a deliberate exception in a 60 Hz region. Mexico uses 127 V at 60 Hz.

The 110–127 V family is historically tied to early North American electrification and persists across the region.

220 to 240 V Family

The 220 to 240 V family covers most of the rest of the world. China, Russia, and much of the CIS list 220 V at 50 Hz. Most of Europe, Asia, Africa, and Oceania list 230 V at 50 Hz, and the United Kingdom and Australia use 230 V as the nominal standard.

The drift from 220 V to 230 V came from a European harmonisation that lifted several countries by 10 V — within the tolerance of most generator alternators.

60 Hz Voltage Exceptions

Three 60 Hz voltage exceptions sit inside the 50 Hz world: Montserrat, Saint Kitts and Nevis, and Antigua and Barbuda run 230 V at 60 Hz. A generator built for 230 V, 50 Hz will not directly power them, and a 120 V, 60 Hz build will not either.

These exceptions are rare but critical to identify before quoting an export order.

Medium‑Voltage Standards

For large installations, three‑phase output scales past the low‑voltage range. Medium‑voltage standards include 3.3 kV (Japan and Korea), 6.6 kV and 11 kV (much of Asia and the Middle East), and 4.16 kV and 13.8 kV (North America).

The country table tells you the destination standard. Configuring the generator to produce it is a four‑step process — exactly what the engineering team does on every export order.

Set Frequency First

50 Hz = 1,500 rpm • 60 Hz = 1,800 rpm. This selects the engine's rated speed, governor, and flywheel — before voltage.

Reconnect Alternator

12‑lead alternator reconfigures to 400 V / 230 V, 415 V / 240 V, or 480 V / 277 V for the destination standard.

Match V/Hz & Set AVR

400 V ÷ 50 Hz = 8.0 • 480 V ÷ 60 Hz = 8.0. The AVR holds this ratio under load at the destination.

What Happens If You Use the Wrong Frequency

A mismatched frequency is not a minor nuisance. It damages equipment in three predictable ways, and the fix is not an adapter — it's either a frequency converter or a correctly built generator.

Motors Run Slower & Overheat

A 60 Hz motor fed with 50 Hz power runs roughly 17% below rated speed. Cooling fans slow, heat builds. A 50 Hz motor on 60 Hz runs 20% fast, accelerating wear.

Transformers Overheat

A transformer sized for one frequency experiences higher core flux density on the other, raising losses and core temperature. A silent failure mode that shortens life.

Centrifugal Loads Overload

Fans, pumps, and blowers are cube‑of‑speed loads. A small speed change produces a large power change — a load can draw far more than the generator is rated for.

The fix is not an adapter. Rotary frequency converters handle roughly 30 to 3,000 kVA; static converters cover roughly 20 to 400 kVA with higher efficiency. Both add cost, complexity, and a point of failure. For a permanent installation, the correct answer is a generator built to the destination frequency — which is why the country lookup comes first.
